India and Belize, both as members of the UN, the Non-aligned Movement, and the Commonwealth, enjoy warm, friendly and cordial relations. Belize, additionally as the only English-speaking country in Central America, has its particular significance for India. Belize traditionally supports India on most issues, and in the UN and other multilateral bodies, and vice versa.
India-Belize two-way trade in 2007-2008 stood at US$ 19.57 million, with imports from Belize dominating at US$ 13.44 million. Indian exports to Belize are predominantly textiles, organic chemicals, pharmaceuticals and auto parts. Belize exports miscellaneous chemical products to India. |

The Indian Diaspora in Belize, consisting of Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Non Resident Indian (NRIs), is estimated to be about 800. Indians started arriving in Belize since 1950s when Belize was still a British colony. Most of them have acquired the citizenship of Belize, and are well integrated with the local community. They are mostly in retail business and trade, and serve as an important bridge between the two countries.
In addition, there is a fairly large group of persons who trace their origin to India. These persons live in villages scattered all over Belize. The ancestors of these people reached Belize in the 19th century as cane cutters. They intermarried with the local people and lost their language and original religion. However, they are still identifiable through their physiognomy and are known as 'Hindus'. They live in compact rural communities and number about 10-15,000, which is more than 5% of the population of Belize. |
